FreshStart Assist

Helping Trading Newsagents.

NewstrAid has always been committed to supporting people who are associated with the retail sector of the news trade and this is reflected in the fact that more than 60% of our regular beneficiaries have worked in retail.

A combination of the current economic climate and changes in the industry mean that more newsagents than ever are struggling and in need of support. Although NewstrAid cannot help with business matters, we are here to help with welfare related difficulties. When dealing with trading newsagents, the most common problems stem from ill health and acts of crime. Sadly, serious violent attacks, targeted at newsagents and their staff, have become more commonplace in recent years and NewstrAid is very receptive and, indeed, proactive, when approached by victims of crime.

Over the past 10 years, we have awarded more than £47,000 in emergency welfare grants to trading newsagents or their staff. Over half of this amount was awarded to those affected by a serious crime, including victims of the 2011 riots.

If you are feeling low, anxious and in need of support, why not try our FREEPHONE HELPLINE for confidential, specialist help, available Monday-Friday, 9.30am – 5.30pm.

Many newsagents we speak to have difficulty managing cash flow and are in debt, but their main objective is to continue trading. In these instances, an immediate referral is made to the NFRN Assist Scheme, as NewstrAid is unable to help with business issues.

Others know that their business is no longer viable, but carry on trading due to fear of homelessness and worry about how they will support their families once the shutters come down. Debts can spiral out of control and problems quickly escalate, with no light at the end of the tunnel. This is where NewstrAid steps in to help.

NewstrAid and the NFRN are now working in partnership to help all trading newsagents and shop staff in need of support. To achieve this, we have jointly launched the FreshStartAssist Scheme.

Deciding to cease trading is a very difficult decision to make and we urge all trading newsagents to contact the NFRN Assist Scheme to discuss their business problems before making a final decision. NFRN Assist has specialist advisers who can help to manage cash flow, structure debts and advise on the viability of a business.

NFRN Assist can be contacted by calling 0800 043 0215 for business advice and support. You do not have to be a member of the NFRN to avail of this service.

However, if the time has come to cease trading, NewstrAid is here to help anyone with a news trade connection to readjust to life after retail. If you are worried about what lies ahead, NewstrAid can help to give you a Fresh Start by offering the following welfare services:

  • Welfare grants, including help with home relocation;
  • State benefit advice;
  • Advice on family welfare issues;
  • Support for disabled and carers;
  • One to one personal support
  • Access to free professional debt advice and funding for debt solutions (IVA/DRO/bankruptcy etc)

Fresh Start Assist is open to all newsagents and their staff, not just NFRN members.
